Are silk pillowcases worth it?
Silk pillowcases… they seem to be endlessly popping up on Instagram and Facebook feed these days – so what, exactly, is so special about them? Being the marketing man’s dream that I am, I couldn’t resist the constant bombardment of special offers and rave reviews. I bit the bullet and paid the rather heavy price tag, to try one. So the big questions – Are silk pillowcases worth it? Do they really live up to their hype and extraordinary claims?
Blissy silk pillowcases
Let me first explain what these pillowcases are and their seemingly too-good-to-be-true claims. The pillowcase I ordered was from Blissy. There are currently many brands, on the silk pillowcase band waggon. And they are all probably, a little bit cheaper than the one I bought! But I am a sucker for beautiful packaging, so fell for the Blissy one, in the pretty box, with the pretty tissue… As I said – marketing man’s dream!
About Blissy pillowcases
The Blissy pillowcase is made of the highest quality, pure mulberry silk, in 22-Momme. Momme is the silk equivalent of thread count, which you often see on cotton, or linen, bedsheets as a measure of quality. The Blissy silk pillowcases come in 3 sizes, and many different colours.
The white one I bought is a beautiful soft white that matches my other bedsheets perfectly. Conveniently, it has a zip close, which keeps it in place, regardless of how much you toss and turn at night. This makes so much sense as, in essence, a lot of the benefits of a silk pillowcase come from it’s slippery properties. So what exactly are these fantastic benefits?
The benefits of silk pillowcases:
- Hypoallergenic, Anti-Bacterial & Non-irritating
- Anti dust mites
- Natural body temperature regulator
- Anti Bed head – stops split ends & hair damage as less friction than cotton
- Keeps hair from being greasy
- Anti aging – helps the skin retain moisture as silk is less absorbent than cotton
- Anti aging – 43% less friction than cotton
- Anti sleep crease – more delicate on skin compared to cotton
- Better sleep
Did my silk pillowcase really make a difference?
I probably have not been using it long enough to honestly see any difference in my skin, in terms of anti aging. I live in hope though that the silky-smooth surface will reduce the friction from any tossing and turning, benefitting my skin in the long run, as test results have shown. Where I have seen a really big difference is with my hair. Everything they say about less frizz and fewer tangles is 100% true! My hair is long, blond, fine and slightly wavy. I normally wake up with it a bit greasy, a tad frizzy, and certainly bed-headish, and not in a sexy, good way! Using a silk pillowcase has totally changed this! Now, on waking, my hair is smooth, tangle-free and almost doesn’t look slept on! But the most extraordinary improvement, and a claim which I was completely sceptical about, was the grease-busting properties I would get from using a silk pillowcase.

Do silk pillowcases really reduce how often you need to wash your hair?
Up until now, I have washed my hair every day since puberty. That is 14,600 shampoos over 40 years! At best, I could push it to 36 hours between washes, before the grease would take over, and it would go limp. As I type, I am on 72 hours of not washing my hair, having slept on silk, rather than cotton, and it is nothing short of a minor miracle! How is this even possible?!
How silk pillowcases reduce the need to wash your hair…
Silk controls sebum production, and it is sebum that makes your hair and skin greasy. The silk fibres are less absorbent than cotton ones, so they don’t draw out the scalp’s natural oils. When oils are absorbed, the scalp produces more sebum to replace it, resulting in greasy hair. Less absorption, less grease – resulting in cleaner looking hair for longer – significantly longer!
Only time will tell how well the other benefits pan out. As a hay fever sufferer, the anti allergen properties appeal, and the cool, smooth feel of the pillowcase is fantastically luxurious, but the truth is, the benefits to the look and feel of my hair alone, would be worth the price tag of a silk pillowcase.
